Can strep throat cause OCD? (The Week)

New York ? A growing body of research into a disorder called PANDAS suggests that some mental illnesses could be fought with simple penicillin

Almost all kids come down with strep throat, and the vast majority of them suffer nothing more than a few days of fever, sore throat, and missed school. Some kids, though, seem to recover then suddenly develop a tic, extreme anxiety, or symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) ? a condition known as PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcus). "Parents have used the word 'possessed,'" says leading PANDAS researcher Susan Swedo at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), one of the first people to link strep to OCD in the mid-1990s. "Their sweet, wonderful child turns into a monster seemingly overnight." Here's a guide to the puzzling, controversial disorder:

What exactly is PANDAS?
An autoimmune reaction to an infection, usually strep, that causes a child to suddenly develop OCD, tics, or neurological problems like anxiety, hyperactivity, and even anorexia. Though the disorder is not well understood, a new and growing body of research is lending wider legitimacy to the idea that mental illnesses can be caused by common bacterial infections.

How could a strep infection affect the brain?
Infections like strep trigger antibodies that are supposed to help fight bacteria, but in some cases ? like the now-rare, strep-linked rheumatic fever ? the antibodies go haywire and attack the body. The theory with PANDAS is that the antibodies attack the brain, causing the OCD and other problems. That theory is bolstered by a 2003 study in Nature Medicine in which immunologist Madeleine Cunningham showed that strep antibodies can attach to neurons that then release large amounts of dopamine and other neurotransmitters believed to cause OCD symptoms.?

What is PANDAS like in practice?
In one case, a mother describes how her second-grade son, coming home from school one day not long after a strep infection, started running maniacally through the house shutting off lights and the TV because they were spreading "radiation" and "poison." Another mother says her just-recovered 11-year-old son woke up one day so terrified of germs that he refused to return to school, showered compulsively, and would only wear a sheet or freshly microwaved clothes. "He had never been like this before. Ever," she tells the Los Angeles Times. "He just woke up with it."

How is PANDAS diagnosed?
There's no test ? yet. The National Institute of Mental Health defines the disorder as a handful of tic outbreaks or OCD episodes that occur shortly after a strep infection. PANDAS is more common in families with a history of rheumatic fever, and scientists think some kids are genetically predisposed to the disorder and other strep-related autoimmune problems.

How common is it?
About 1 percent of U.S. children have OCD and maybe 20 percent have at least temporary tics. But nobody knows how many of those cases have any connection to strep, how long PANDAS can lie dormant after a strep outbreak, or even how common ODC is. "I used to think it was exceedingly rare," says OCD expert Michael Jenike at Harvard Medical School. "Now I think it's exceedingly common."

How do you treat PANDAS?
The medical community is split. Some doctors treat PANDAS like other cases of OCD or tics, typically with antidepressants or cognitive-behavioral therapy. Others use antibiotics to douse any remaining strep infection, or turn to a more invasive method called intravenous immunoglobin (IVIG), which involves transfusing plasma from healthy donors to shut down the wonky antibody response.?

Do either of those work?
The research is mixed. A 1999 study in the British journal the Lancet found IVIG treatments to be effective for children with strep and OCD, but another study the next year found no improvement. A new study is in the works at the NIMH. Until there is more definitive evidence that either experimental treatment works, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends antidepressants and therapy. That doesn't still well with all PANDAS parents, says Melinda Beck in The Wall Street Journal, many of whom "are incensed that doctors are willing to prescribe psychotropic drugs to their young children but not 10 days of penicillin."

Might antibiotics really cure OCD?
Some specialists swear by them as a treatment, if not a cure. "I've been working in psychiatry for 20 years and I've never seen psychotropic medications turn a child around as quickly as I've seen antibiotics turn a PANDAS child around," says Tanya Murphy at the University of Florida's Rothman Center for Pediatric Neuropsychiatry. But symptoms can flare up again, often more severe, if the person is exposed to strep again. Still, researchers are excited about the possibilities, for OCD and a host of other psychological disorders. "If you can prevent lifelong suffering by using antibiotics or some acute intervention, that would be huge," says Jenike.?

What are the larger implications?
If researchers can definitively show that strep infections can cause OCD, that implies that other neurological disorders like autism, schizophrenia, and eating disorders might also be tied to errant antibodies from normal infections. It also opens up the possibility that those conditions could be treated with antibiotics or other medical interventions.     Golden Globe noms rev up Hollywood's Oscar race (AP)

    BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. ? The Golden Globes are good at predicting likely best-picture nominees for the Academy Awards. Not so much at predicting the eventual big Oscar winner, though.

    Globe voters, who release their nominations Thursday, used to have a solid track record as a forecast for the Oscar best-picture prize. But they've been swinging and missing recently, with only one top Globe recipient going on to claim the main trophy come Oscar night during the last seven years.

    Yet the Globes might have better luck this time. The show has two best-picture categories, one for drama, the other for musicals or comedies. The latter category usually doesn't offer serious best-picture contenders at the Oscars, which tend toward heavier drama.

    But this season, the spry, black-and-white silent film "The Artist" stands as a solid comedy to challenge the dramas at the Oscars. If "The Artist" wins the Globe musical or comedy prize, it could end up in an Oscar showdown with the Globe drama winner, whose contenders might include the Deep South tale "The Help," George Clooney's family story "The Descendants," Steven Spielberg's World War I epic "War Horse" and Martin Scorsese's Paris adventure "Hugo."

    Last season, the Facebook tale "The Social Network" emerged as the film to beat at the Oscars after it won for best drama at the Globes. Then the monarchy saga "The King's Speech" picked up steam with key wins at Hollywood trade union honors and wound up crowned best picture at the Oscars.

    The year before, the Globes chose "Avatar" over "The Hurt Locker," the latter ending up the Oscar champ.

    The last time the Globes matched up with the Oscars was three years ago, when "Slumdog Millionaire" triumphed at both ceremonies.

    Before its current seven-year streak of mostly misses, the Globes had been on a run of eight-straight years in which either its best drama or best musical-comedy winner took home the best-picture Oscar.

    Along with Clooney for "The Descendants," A-listers potentially scoring Globe nominations include: Brad Pitt for both his baseball tale "Moneyball" and the family epic "The Tree of Life"; Meryl Streep for the Margaret Thatcher chronicle "The Iron Lady"; Glenn Close for the Irish drama "Albert Nobbs"; Leonardo DiCaprio for the J. Edgar Hoover biography "J. Edgar"; and Michelle Williams for the Marilyn Monroe story "My Week with Marilyn."

    "The Help" could have a big haul at the Globes, with acting prospects for Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Jessica Chastain, Emma Stone and Bryce Dallas Howard.

    Among other fresher faces with a shot at breaking into the awards are Rooney Mara for the thriller "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"; Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo for "The Artist"; Michael Fassbender for the sex-addict drama "Shame"; and Clooney's "Descendants" co-star Shailene Woodley.

    With drinks and dinner, the Globes are a laid-back affair for Hollywood's elite compared to the Oscars. The show turned a bit touchy last year as host Ricky Gervais repeatedly made sharp wisecracks about stars and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a group of about 85 entertainment reporters for overseas outlets that presents the Globes.

    But Gervais helped give the show a TV ratings boost, and he's been invited back as host for a third-straight year.

    Five-time Academy Award and Globe nominee Morgan Freeman ? who won the supporting-actor Oscar for "Million Dollar Baby" and a best-actor Globe for "Driving Miss Daisy" ? will receive the group's Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement at the Jan. 15 ceremony.

    Thursday's nominations in 25 film and television categories will be announced by actors Sofia Vergara, Woody Harrelson and Gerard Butler.

    A day after the Pentagon acknowledged that an unmanned American reconnaissance drone went missing while on an operation in western Afghanistan late last week, Defense officials still smarting from the incident have come forward to dismiss Iranian claims that the drone was brought down by hostile activity. And American cyber experts similarly expressed skepticism over Iranian contentions that hackers based in Iran brought down the drone by penetrating its software or jamming its signals.

    "The one thing I can tell you is we don't have any indications that the UAV [unmanned aerial vehicle], that we know we no longer have, was brought down by hostile activity of any kind," Pentagon spokesman Capt. John Kirby told reporters at a Pentagon press briefing Monday otherwise short of many further details on the embarrassing incident, ABC News's Luis Martinez reported. "As it says in the statement, the controllers lost control and, without getting into specific details, I think we're comfortable stating that there's no indication of hostile activity."

    Likewise, the reported contention made by some Iranian military officials that an Iranian cyber-warfare unit commandeered the drone strains credulity, cyber-security expert James Lewis said.

    "Iran hacking into the drone is as likely as an Ayatollah standing on a mountain-top and using thought waves to bring it down," Lewis, a former Reagan administration official now with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told Yahoo News by email Monday. "The most likely explanation is that it crashed on its own."

    "If you could hack into a drone, you wouldn't use it for some spontaneous fun, you'd save it for a rainy day," Lewis continued. "You'd need to be able to hack either the control network in the U.S. or a satellite.? Neither is easy, and both are probably not something the Iranians can do."Read More ?

    Surpassing the physical limits of silicon

    After having revealed the electronic advantages of molybdenite, EPFL researchers have now taken the next definitive step. The Laboratory of Nanoscale Electronics and Structures (LANES) has made a chip, or integrated circuit, confirming that molybdenite can surpass the physical limits of silicon in terms of miniaturization, electricity consumption, and mechanical flexibility.

    "We have built an initial prototype, putting from two to six serial transistors in place, and shown that basic binary logic operations were possible, which proves that we can make a larger chip," explains LANES director Andras Kis, who recently published two articles on the subject in the scientific journal ACS Nano.

    In early 2011, the lab unveiled the potential of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), a relatively abundant, naturally occurring mineral. Its structure and semi?conducting properties make it an ideal material for use in transistors. It can thus compete directly with silicon, the most highly used component in electronics, and on several points it also rivals graphene.

    Three atoms thick

    "The main advantage of MoS2 is that it allows us to reduce the size of transistors, and thus to further miniaturize them," explains Kis. It has not been possible up to this point to make layers of silicon less than two nanometers thick, because of the risk of initiating a chemical reaction that would oxidize the surface and compromise its electronic properties. Molybdenite, on the other hand, can be worked in layers only three atoms thick, making it possible to build chips that are at least three times smaller. At this scale, the material is still very stable and conduction is easy to control.

    Not as greedy

    MoS2 transistors are also more efficient. "They can be turned on and off much more quickly, and can be put into a more complete standby mode," Kis explains.

    Molybdenite is on a par with silicon in terms of its ability to amplify electronic signals, with an output signal that is four times stronger than the incoming signal. This proves that there is "considerable potential for creating more complex chips," Kis says. "With graphene, for example, this amplitude is about 1. Below this threshold, the output voltage would not be sufficient to feed a second, similar chip."

    Built in flexibility

    Molybdenite also has mechanical properties that make it interesting as a possible material for use in flexible electronics, such as eventually in the design of flexible sheets of chips. These could, for example, be used to manufacture computers that could be rolled up or devices that could be affixed to the skin.

    REVEALED: The Most Powerful Investing Tool in the History of ...

    I just wrote 200 words of drivel about how this market was on the verge of punching short sellers in the face through late January. I deleted the post, then proceeded to defeat my youngest in a game of chess. It?s really stupid for anyone to make long term predictions at this stage in the game. The truth of the matter is, the market is running on faith now. Technicals and fundies have a limited effect on the market. The daily fluctuations of this tape are dictated by the news flow out of Europe. We?ve all known this for sometime now. Pardon my redundancy.

    About a month ago, I was sitting high on the hog, spitting at people down below, with annual gains of 16%. Then, all of a sudden, Mother Market chopped my hands off, preventing me from pushing the sell button as the market plunged amidst euro-panic. I shed an amazing 16% aka all of my gains in three short weeks. At the very lows of the market, I was distraught, feeling a sense of defeat and helplessness, as the news turned from bad to worse. I held my positions, only because of my Kamikaze mentality. If my personality was different, I probably would have sold to protect assets from going negative for the year. I rationalized my reasons for being long, declaring that gold/silver miners (then 40% of assets) would benefit greatly under a euro collapse. Luckily, as seems to be a common occurrence throughout my investing career, the worm turned big time last week, allowing me to recoup a staggering 13%.

    Upon receiving this great boon, I booked profits in all of my miners, except AG, repositioning the funds elsewhere. Why? To be honest, I don?t know. I just didn?t like the way EXK, NGD and RGLD were trading early Friday morning. I realized selling them would go against everything I?ve been saying for the past month. But, to me, nothing else was more important than making money. My opinions change often and I cannot help that. This will confound most of you, especially new people to the site. If you follow my moves over time, however, you will learn to understand the method behind my madness.

    Let?s take the example of TEA. I penned an article on TEA when the stock was $24, declaring it could become ?the next big thing? in retail. In addition to my bullish points, I pointed to the fact that the shares were very expensive and it could drop by 50% without pause. The reason why I didn?t buy it was the same reason why I sold NFLX @ $90. I could not rationalize being long high risk names, with questionable valuations, into a shit storm of negative news flow. In a way, I got lucky. After all, I liked the story and did not feel the excessive valuation was a huge concern, considering high growth names like PNRA, AMZN and CMG have been ?expensive? for years. I just used my gut, and as a result, avoided a murderhole.

    The same thing happened with my LULU last week. On earnings day, the stock cratered 8 points. I was very close to just booking the 20% loss and moving on. However, I could not justify booking the loss given the paltry bear case. The earnings were good. People were bugging the fuck out. By closing time, the stock was down just $2, recovering $6 from 9:31am. The next morning, it caught an upgrade, leading to a $2.5 melt up. Another disaster averted.

    My point is this: investing successfully is a lot more than reading balance sheets or charting moving averages. It is an art. As an artist, I look at things that many of you might not even notice. On the other hand, my jaded view on stocks often prevents me from enjoying huge winners. It?s a trade off that I am comfortable with because it works for me?having crushed this tape every year since 2003. If your philosophy has never worked for you, do not be afraid to get radical and try something different. Over the course of my career, I was a balance sheet guy, bond guy, VC guy, iPO guy, bank stock guy, biotech guy, tech guy, healthcare guy, military contractor guy and even a chart guy. I?ve endured millions in losses before it all ?clicked.?

    Do not lose faith in your ability to make intuitive decisions. Is it luck or skill, who knows? At the end of the day, does it really fucking matter?
