LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? You love him as British cop "Luther," you loved him as the thinking man's drug kingpin Stringer Bell on "The Wire," and Idris Elba hopes one day you'll love him as the post-Daniel Craig James Bond.
Asked in an interview with National Public Radio if he'd be interested in the role, the Emmy-nominated "Luther" star said he would be -- but only if he's not known as the "black Bond."
"I'd definitely consider it," Elba said. "I just don't want to be the black James Bond. Sean Connery wasn't the Scottish James Bond, and Daniel Craig wasn't the blue-eyed James Bond, so if I played him, I don't want to be called the black James Bond."
NPR interviewer Linda Wertheimer then tried to elicit a more committed response from Elba, asking if he'd jump into a cab if Sony called and asked him to come to a meeting about a potential 007 movie.
"I'd not only get in the cab, but I'd take the taxi driver out of the car, hostage," he said. "The taxi, jump out while it was moving, jump onto a pedal bike that was just past the door as I got on it, and then get onto a plane -- on the wing -- land on top of Sony Studios, slide through the air conditioning, and land in the office."

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2011) ? The company an adolescent keeps affects his or her behavior -- particularly when these friends engage in illicit activities and are indifferent to education -- right?
Well, that all depends, according to a new Northwestern University study, "Being in 'Bad' Company: Power Dependence and Status in Adolescent Susceptibility to Peer Influence," which appears in the September issue of Social Psychology Quarterly.
The research, conducted in a primarily Hispanic, low-income neighborhood, looked at academically diverse groups of friends that included both high- and low-achieving young adults.
According to the study, some adolescents in the mixed groups were insulated from the influence of their more self destructive peers. "Opposite to what a lot of researchers think would happen, some kids in the groups, for example, neglected or didn't even care about school, while others were dedicated students," said Robert Vargas, a doctoral student in sociology at Northwestern and author of the study.
Interestingly, Vargas found that adolescents could also be insulated from the positive influence of their peers.
Adolescents in his study were insulated if they had characteristics that their friends respected (e.g., close friendships with members of the opposite sex) or had something that their friends needed (e.g., a car).
Among those adolescents who were negatively influenced by peers, neighborhood violence and territorial boundaries were likely to be part of the dynamics contributing to their bad behavior, Vargas said.
"It wasn't that these kids thought the bad behavior was 'cool,' but rather neighborhood violence constrained their friendship choices," he said.
In the neighborhood where Vargas conducted his research, the territorial border of the major gangs in the neighborhood made it difficult for kids to walk to a friend's house who lived on "the other side" of the neighborhood.
"The young gang members in the neighborhood were very territorial and would attack young people perceived to be in the rival gang when they crossed the border," he said. "Those fearful of being caught in the crossfire tended to avoid crossing the gang boundary, greatly restricting access to certain, possibly more positive, friends."
Young adults from such neighborhoods often don't have the power to find other friends or leave their friendship groups to avoid negative peer pressure. "The effects of neighborhood violence and fears of crossing gang boundaries influences these young people to hang out with people they otherwise would avoid," Vargas said.
In terms of policy implications, Vargas said, "The study demonstrates the need for policymakers and educators to move beyond public campaigns that convey to adolescents that undesirable acts are 'not cool,' and consider factors that make adolescents dependent on friends or adults. As adolescents were influenced by individuals they depended on most, policymakers and educators should consider trying to make young people more dependent on positive role models by, for example, requiring community service hours."

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) ? Tony Romo's broken rib hurt so much he needed a second pain-killing injection. His center had a tendency to snap the ball too soon or to the wrong spot. And he couldn't get into the end zone no matter what, not even with a first down on the 2-yard line.
Yet Romo and the Dallas Cowboys did the only thing that mattered. They won.
Dan Bailey kicked six field goals, including a go-ahead 40-yarder with 1:52 left, and linebacker Anthony Spencer forced a fumble that teammate Sean Lee recovered with 28 seconds left, giving the Cowboys an 18-16 victory over the Washington Redskins on Monday night.
"It feels good right now because we won," Romo said, smiling and wincing. "I'll be all right."
Romo was 22 of 36 for 255 yards. His best stat was simply lasting all four quarters.
The fact that he needed a second injection could explain the quarter-sized blotch of blood that appeared on his jersey above his left hip during the game. After the game, he joked that his new bride forced him to play, saying, "I can't have a weak husband lying around the house."
"I want to play," Romo said. "We only get to go out and do this 16 times, 16 days out of 365 days a year. You want to be out there. You put so much effort, when you go, you go."
Romo was hardly hit in the first half, then the Redskins got in several crushing blows starting just after halftime. That's also when the snaps became an issue. He couldn't hide his frustration with new center Phil Costa, and clearly wasn't happy with receiver Kevin Ogletree after an incompletion at the end of the drive that reached the 2; that failure forced Dallas to settle for its fifth field goal and a 16-15 deficit instead of a go-ahead touchdown.
Rob Ryan's re-energized Dallas defense got the ball back quickly, and Romo took advantage. Another bad snap left the Cowboys with a third-and-21, and Romo followed with a rollout to his right and a deep pass to Dez Bryant for a 30-yard gain. Another 15 yards were tacked on because of a facemask penalty on the beaten defender ? cornerback DeAngelo Hall, who last week said he was hoping "to put my helmet on whatever's hurt" on Romo and all other wounded Cowboys.
Hall had plenty more to say after the game. In an expletive-filled interview, he questioned the eight-man front on Bryant's catch and the official's decision to flag him.
"I told the ref after that call, that might have been his worst call of the game," Hall said. "He's going to get demerit points for that call. Because that wasn't no facemask."
When Washington quarterback Rex Grossman's fumble was recovered by Lee, Cowboys coach Jason Garrett dropped to a knee and pumped his fist wildly. He had good reason to celebrate: Dallas was about to be 2-1, guaranteeing no repeat of last year's miserable 1-7 start. The Cowboys are even tied for first place in the NFC East, along with Washington (2-1), which was seeking its first 3-0 start since 2005.
"We're better than last year ? already," Dallas linebacker Bradie James said.
This was the second straight game that a Romo-Bailey tandem pulled out a victory. Against San Francisco a week ago Sunday, Bailey made a tying field goal at the end of regulation, then the winner in overtime.
Bailey's other kicks Monday night covered 41 (twice), 32, 27 and 23 yards.
"We had good snaps, good holds, great protection. I had the easy job," said Bailey, an undrafted rookie who was named the nation's top kicker in college last season at Oklahoma State. "Whenever you can string a couple of kicks together, it's a confidence booster."
Romo wasn't the only Dallas player who gutted it out.
Bryant missed the previous game with a thigh injury, yet had four catches for 63 yards. Felix Jones, who separated a shoulder against the 49ers, ran for a career-high 115 yards and caught three passes for 40 more. Jason Witten fought through a rib injury to catch six passes for 60 yards.
"It wasn't a perfect performance by any means, but enough to win the game," Garrett said.
The Dallas defense limited the Redskins to field goals on two of their first three drives, the latter reaching the Dallas 9.
Grossman really only had one solid drive, a 76-yarder capped by a 1-yard touchdown pass to Tim Hightower that put Washington up 16-9. The Redskins never even crossed midfield after that, punting on three straight drives then losing the fumble.
"It feels like the waste of a week," tight end Chris Cooley said. "We're capable of winning a division game on the road. I'm disappointed with the way we finished."
Grossman was 22 of 37 for 250 yards. He was sacked three times ? once by DeMarcus Ware, his NFL-leading fifth ? and threw an interception.
Explaining his game-deciding fumble, Grossman said, "I was trying to make a play. I felt like I could get the ball to Santana (Moss). I obviously couldn't."
Most of the Redskins' points came from Graham Gano, who made field goals of 50, 46 and 27 yards. Another was blocked after a poor hold.
"We're going to find out what type of football team we have," Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said. "When you lose like that it hurts. We don't have time to feel sorry for yourself."
Notes: This was Dallas' ninth straight game decided by three points or less. ... Dallas improved to just 9-8 at Cowboys Stadium. The Redskins are 0-3. ... Bailey had the most field goals for Dallas since Billy Cundiff kicked seven in 2003. ... Washington's LaRon Landry had four tackles and forced a fumble in his first game since November because of injuries. ... This was the 15th Dallas-Washington game on a Monday night. The only teams that have met more are Denver-Raiders, 16 times.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Grim photos of Michael Jackson lying dead in a hospital bed juxtaposed with a picture of the "Thriller" singer rehearsing the day before his demise brought an emotional opening on Tuesday to the manslaughter trial of the doctor hired to care for him.
In opening arguments two years after Jackson's sudden death by drug overdose, prosecutor David Walgren told jurors that the pop star "literally put his life in the hands of Dr. Conrad Murray."
"That misplaced trust in the hands of Conrad Murray cost Michael Jackson his life," Walgren added.
But Murray's lawyers argued that Jackson "caused his own death" by giving himself extra medication. "He died so rapidly, so instantly, he didn't even have time to close his eyes," defence attorney Ed Chernoff said in opening arguments.
Murray has pleaded not guilty to the involuntary manslaughter of Jackson on June 25, 2009, but faces a prison sentence of up to four years if jurors find he is ultimately responsible for the pop star's death due to inadequate care. The trial is expected to last four to six weeks.
The Texas cardiologist, who was getting $150,000 a month to care for Jackson, wiped away tears during Tuesday's opening statements as attorney Chernoff defended him.
Jackson's lifeless body was found at his rented Los Angeles mansion just three weeks before a series of 50 planned London comeback concerts titled "This Is It" were scheduled to begin.
Murray has admitted giving the 50 year-old pop star a dose of the powerful anaesthetic propofol as a sleeping aid while he rehearsed for the shows. But Chernoff told jurors Murray was trying to wean the pop star off his addiction to the drug, which Jackson called his "milk."
Tired, weary of rehearsing, and under pressure to get the concerts ready, a frustrated Jackson gave himself eight lorazepam anti-anxiety pills in a bid to sleep in the early hours of June 25, 2009, Chernoff said.
"PERFECT STORM"
"We believe the evidence will show. ... that when Dr. Murray left the room, Michael Jackson self-administered a dose of propofol that with the lorazepam created a perfect storm within his body that killed him instantly," Chernoff added.
Jackson's parents, Joe and Katherine, his sisters, Janet and La Toya, and other family members were in court on Tuesday, while outside dozens of fans outside the courtroom held sunflowers, pictures of the dead pop star, and placards saying "Justice for Michael."
Walgren opened the prosecution case by showing jurors a photo of a thin Jackson lying dead on a hospital gurney, side by side with a picture of him singing and dancing while rehearsing for the concerts one day before. Footage of the rehearsals was made into Jackson's posthumous concert movie "This Is It" in 2009, that became a global box office hit.
But Chernoff painted a different scenario, claiming that Jackson was under huge pressure to make the concerts -- his first in 10 years -- a success, not just financially but also to restore his image after his damaging 2005 trial and acquittal for child molestation.
Jurors are expected to hear testimony from the paramedics who transported Jackson to the hospital, medical experts, Jackson's choreographer and Murray's girlfriends.
The first prosecution witness is expected to be Kenny Ortega, the choreographer and film director who was hired to stage the London shows and who was conducting rehearsals with Jackson in Los Angeles.

Choosing the best possible domain name for your online business is essential to succession in the online world. There are many factors you should take into consideration when trying to get the best possible domain. Your domain name will be how your customers/visitors know, and remember, your website. The most important factors to getting the best domain name for your online business are listed in order of importance:
Pronounceable & Easy To Remember There is nothing worse that when you are trying to find a website you have recently visited, and you can not even remember the domain name of the website. The single and most important factor to take into consideration when selecting your domain is to make sure it is pronounceable so it is easier to remember. If your domain name is easy to remember, and can be spoken with ease, then it is much more likely that your visitors will return to your website. When trying to think of possible domains, it?s a good idea to say your suggestion over and over to yourself several times to see if it sounds good, and if it would be easy to remember.
Brandable Although having a domain name which is made up of dictionary word is good, it?s not always the best domain for a brand. For example, a name like ?Toys.com? may be an amazing domain, however it would be extremely difficult to brand the name ?toys?. A good brandable domain name is made up from possibly ?twisted? dictionary words, or even completely made up words. As long as the ?made up? word sounds good, and agrees with the point I have made above, then it could possibly be a really good domain name. Look at Google.com, Yahoo.com, and Bing.com for an example; none of those are words. However nearly everyone on this earth recognizes and remembers these names. Selecting a domain which is easily brandable is essential in most cases.
Domain Extension The domain name extension is another very important factor to take into consideration when picking the best domain for your online business. When selecting a domain name, it?s never a good idea to select a domain extension simply because the other (better) extensions were already taken. Dot com domain is the best possible extension available at this period of time however dot net, and dot org domains are not too far behind dot come. The only reason you should choose another domain extension for your online business is if it makes sense for your business, is your targeted audiences country extension (eg,.co.uk,.us) or some other reason. For example del.icio.us uses the dot us extension not because it?s the only domain that was available, or not even because it?s targeted audience is in the US, it uses that domain extension because it makes sense for the business name. The dot us finishes the word ?Delicious?. This is possibly not the most important factor to take into consideration, however it?s most certainly one to have a serious think about when trying to get the best domain name for your business.
Keywords in Domain Name Having targeted and related keywords in your domain is a good idea not only for your customers/visitors benefit, but also for your websites SEO benefits. When keywords are in your websites domain name, your visitors will know straight away what your website is briefly about, and what to expect from it. You may think this disagrees with one of the earlier points I?ve made about your domain being brandable, however it is still possible to create a brandable name and include keywords at the same time. Furthermore, having keywords within your domain helps search engines distinguish your domain main target niche from another and ultimately giving your domain a better chance at competing for the keyword against other websites.
Easy To Spell This may not seem like a major factor, however you would be surprised at how many visitors a website can lose simply because a person cannot spell the domain name. You have to take into consideration that most of the time if someone fails to get to your website after misspelling your domain several times, they will simply forget about your website, and continue doing something else. Try not to include long, and easily prone to spelling mistakes words within your domain. Not all users take advantage of the ?Did you mean?? feature that search engines offer unfortunately.
You must always remember that your domain is your impression to your visitors or customers. Never underestimate your websites domain name, or think that it wont matter towards this future of your website.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Sen. Dianne Feinstein's campaign filed a lawsuit Friday against a bank that handled accounts for a prominent Democratic campaign treasurer accused of looting millions of dollars from the war chests of local, state and federal politicians.
The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, names First California Bank, treasurer Kinde Durkee, Durkee's firm and two business associates, including her husband, who is a partner in her business. The filing comes two days after state financial regulators launched an investigation into how the bank managed the dozens of accounts Durkee maintained at First California, based near Los Angeles in Westlake Village.
"A fraud of the scale alleged herein could not have occurred, and did not occur, without the knowing involvement of First California Bank," the lawsuit reads. "In exchange for fees and profits, First California Bank intentionally ignored dozens of red flags, ignored its duties and obligations under state and federal law and allowed Durkee to perpetuate the scheme."
The bank's chief marketing officer, Diane Dickerson, said the company had not been served with the lawsuit and could not comment. Durkee's attorney, Daniel Nixon, also did not return a call.
The longtime treasurer, who controlled more than 400 accounts, was charged earlier this month with mail fraud by federal prosecutors who alleged she siphoned nearly $700,000 from a state candidate's campaign to pay her credit cards, a mortgage, business bills and her mother's care at an assisted-living facility. She then shifted funds from other candidates' accounts in an elaborate shell game to cover up the wrongdoing, prosecutors allege.
She admitted to authorities that she had been misappropriating her clients' money for years, according to the criminal complaint.
The scope of the scandal remains unclear even weeks after Durkee's arrest, but Feinstein estimates in the court papers filed Friday that she lost "millions of dollars" from at least two campaign committees, Feinstein for Senate and Fund for the Majority.
The complaint spells out several examples of alleged wrongdoing, including two instances of illicit transfers from Feinstein's campaign accounts this summer.
In the first, Durkee transferred $80,000 from one of the senator's accounts in two transactions and then re-deposited the same amount in the account three weeks later, the lawsuit alleges.
In the second, she took $100,000 from another Feinstein account and re-deposited it the same day, the court papers allege.
She has not been able to determine her exact losses because First California has refused to give her access to her accounts without a letter absolving the bank of any responsibility ? which Feinstein won't sign, said Bill Carrick, her lead strategist.
The bank announced last week that it was seeking to have a judge sort out who owns the money in dozens of hopelessly co-mingled Durkee-controlled accounts ? essentially putting a freeze on the money.
"I think our point of view is we want a full accounting of all these bank accounts so we know what happened and then we want to be reimbursed for everything that was wrongfully taken," Carrick said. "All of this happened inside that bank so they had full knowledge .... of this whole scheme."
The growing implications of Durkee's arrest have put the spotlight on an insular political culture that allowed one person to hold the purse strings for a clientele that left no levels of the party unscathed, from local mayoral candidates and small Democratic clubs to state politicians to federal lawmakers such as Feinstein.
Dozens of small Democratic clubs and medium-sized political action committees also may have been wiped out.
Durkee got most of her clients through word-of-mouth within the party. Smaller clubs were often steered toward her independent firm, Durkee & Associates, by local party bosses because she offered grass-roots groups her services at free or dramatically reduced rates.

New polling data shows Mitt Romney cruising in New Hampshire, with nearly quadruple the support of Jon Huntsman, the GOP candidate in third place. Wait, why?d you skip to the third place guy? Who?s in second?
Texas Congressman Ron Paul, of course.
Even though Huntsman and Paul both gained the same amount (six percentage points) since the last Suffolk University poll in June, and Paul has 14 percent support to Huntsman?s 10 percent, Decoder isn?t seeing any media love being thrown Paul?s way this morning.
This, despite the fact that the canned, ready-to-be-quoted bit from the Suffolk press release gives equal billing to Paul?s improvement alongside Huntsman?s.
?Mitt Romney is saying ?get out of my back yard? and making New Hampshire his strong firewall despite showing some weakness in the other states? early primaries,? said David Paleologos, director of Suffolk University?s Political Research Center. ?The anti-Romney candidate at this point could be either Ron Paul, who has polled consistently over the past year, or Jon Huntsman, whose numbers are really growing in the Granite State.?
Decoder would also point out: Among second-choice candidates - meaning if your first-choice candidate were to drop out, who would you then support? - Romney edges Perry at 21 percent to 20 percent, followed by? you guessed it, Ron Paul at 9 percent.
One reason Huntsman?s bump in New Hampshire may be attracting more attention: because it?s pretty much the first real movement for him in any poll anywhere (see RealClearPolitics? great polling data to see his historical polls, which have all been sub-six percent). And it comes amid a plethora of signs that Huntsman?s campaign has been floundering. (Decoder recently wondered if it was time for Huntsman to give it up.)
Huntsman has now moved staff out of his other early primary state (Florida) and brought them to the Granite State. As such, we may have to wait for the next poll to see whether this one is an aberration or if Huntsman?s New-Hampshire-or-bust strategy is actually paying off.
Still, as Decoder wrote yesterday, the ?Ron Paul can?t get no respect? theme isn?t all campaign spin.

Zebras vs. cattle: Not so black-and-whitePublic release date: 22-Sep-2011 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Grazing by wild animals like zebra doesn't always harm, and may help, livestock like cattle
African ranchers often prefer to keep wild grazers like zebras off the grass that fattens their cattle.
But a new study by Kenyan and University of California at Davis researchers shows that grazing by wild animals doesn't always harm, and may sometimes benefit, cattle.
The results are published in this week's issue of the journal Science.
"Although savanna rangelands worldwide are managed on the premise that cattle and wildlife compete for food, there is little scientific information to support this assumption," said Wilfred Odadi, a researcher at the Mpala Research Centre in Kenya and a co-author of the paper.
"When we look at the effect of wildlife on cattle, we find that they sometimes do suppress weight gain by cattle, but also sometimes enhance it," said Truman Young, a plant scientist at UC Davis and lead author of the paper.
"Generally the decision has been to exclude wild animals, but we're saying that things are not that simple," Young said.
"The finding that wildlife has a positive effect on cattle growth and production during times of plenty adds new insight into the role that facilitation plays in natural communities," said Saran Twombly, program director in the National Science Foundation's Division of Environmental Biology, which funded the research.
"Results from this study also speak directly to the critical importance of biodiversity in maintaining natural ecosystems," Twombly said.
The researchers enclosed 10-acre plots of savanna rangeland with fences to exclude wild animals--principally zebras.
Then they weighed the cattle grazing either with or without wild grazers to measure how much weight they put on at different times of the year, which is the bottom-line for ranchers.
Odadi and colleagues found that during the dry season, grazing by wild animals reduced weight gain by cattle,
but in the wet season, cattle actually put on more weight when they grazed alongside wildlife.
The explanation is that during the wet season, grass can grow long and become rank, inaccessible and poor in nutritional value.
"When the grass grows very fast and is at risk of becoming rank, having zebras is beneficial," Young said. "They are more than willing to knock back the rank grass."
That means higher-quality, fresher grass for the cattle.
It's not yet clear whether there is a net benefit over a whole year or series of years, Young said, because conditions can vary considerably from year to year. Ranchers are beginning to explore additional ways to control rank grass, such as controlled burns.
"From a management perspective, the positive effect of wildlife on weight gain by cattle during the wet season suggests that wildlife conservation is not necessarily detrimental to, and can be compatible with, cattle production," Odadi said.
"Our findings provide further evidence that biodiversity conservation and economic development can be simultaneously achieved in human-occupied savanna landscapes."

Conventional hand grippers offer very little prospects for a person to take advantage of as grip strength seldom changes and the frequent usage of this device generates a loss in resistance. This requires a person to frequently invest in these tools furthermore never supplies them with a genuine opportunity to move past basic hand strength. This opportunity has changed because of the Captains of Crush and the various advantages that are developed through these products.
The first advantage that a person can reap the benefits of is found with the varied levels of resistance created through the use of this product. Varied hand grippers provide completely different levels of gripping strength to not just facilitate a person strengthen their grip but continuously strengthen their grip over the course of time. NEW YORK ? B.J. Upton and the Tampa Bay Rays never mounted that game-changing rally. Fortunately for them, the Baltimore Orioles did just that in Boston.
Ivan Nova pitched shutout ball into the eighth inning, Curtis Granderson drove in four runs and the New York Yankees moved within one win of a postseason spot by beating Tampa Bay 5-0 on Tuesday night.
Though they wasted a chance to trim their deficit in the AL wild-card race, the Rays had something to feel good about: They remained two games behind the Red Sox, who coughed up a late lead and lost 7-5 to Baltimore.
"Obviously, we would have liked to have gained a game, but it didn't happen," Upton said. "We can't dwell on it. It's done with. The good thing is, we didn't lose any ground, either. We have to regroup and get ready to win a ballgame tomorrow."
Granderson hit a three-run double and reached base four times, boosting his MVP credentials as the Yankees slowed Tampa Bay's late charge at Boston. The Rays have nine games remaining, six against the Yankees. The Red Sox have seven games left, four against last-place Baltimore and three in New York.
"I absolutely love it. This is what you plot in the offseason, and you play the whole season to play meaningful games at this time of year," Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said. "I know we're not going to get any extra money for it, but we've already been in the playoffs for about 10 days. And it's been fantastic."
New York can secure its 16th postseason trip in 17 years with one victory in Wednesday's day-night doubleheader against the Rays. In fact, the AL East leaders are in with a win over Tampa Bay in any of their six remaining matchups this season.
The Yankees could also wrap up the division title Wednesday with a doubleheader sweep and another Red Sox loss to Baltimore.
"Right now we feel we've got ourselves in a good spot," outfielder Nick Swisher said. "We're not worried about anybody else, we're not paying attention to anybody else."
One day after Mariano Rivera set the major league saves record with No. 602, New York turned its attention to a four-game series with surging Tampa Bay, which trailed Boston by nine games on Sept. 3. No major league team has ever overcome that large a deficit in September to reach the postseason.
Nova (16-4) pitched in traffic all night but the rookie never caved, allowing six hits and three walks over 7 2-3 innings. Despite a midseason demotion to the minors, he is 12-0 with a 3.09 ERA in 15 starts since a June 3 loss at the Los Angeles Angels.
Nova's ability to pitch out of trouble kept the Yankees in control even though they went 1 for 7 with the bases loaded and stranded 18 runners ? their most in a nine-inning game since Sept. 21, 1956, when they set the major league record with 20 in a 13-7 loss at Boston.
One of the few big hits was Granderson's bases-loaded double down the right-field line off Wade Davis (10-10) in the second. Eric Chavez had an RBI single earlier in the inning following Swisher's leadoff double.
The rally was helped along when Brett Gardner reached on a bunt single to load the bases. It appeared second baseman Sean Rodriguez had his foot on the edge of the first base bag as he took the throw in time, but Gardner was called safe by umpire Scott Barry.
Davis and Maddon argued the call, to no avail.
"I felt strong. I just never got into a good rhythm," Davis said. "It's frustrating. You want to go out there and keep your team in the game, and then you give up four runs in an inning. It's tough to swallow."
Granderson added an RBI infield single in the fifth, when first baseman Casey Kotchman shoveled low to the pitcher covering.
Tampa Bay put the leadoff man on four times against Nova, including every inning from the fifth through the seventh. But the Rays couldn't cash in.
Nova worked out of a bases-loaded, none-out jam in the seventh. He retired Desmond Jennings on a shallow fly and screamed into his glove after Upton grounded into an inning-ending double play.
"He threw a lot of strikes. We hit some balls hard, just couldn't scrap for runs," Upton said. "Overall, you've just got to tip your cap to him. He made pitches when he needed to and didn't really let us get anything going."
Boone Logan and Luis Ayala finished the six-hitter.

WASHINGTON ? Call it the recession's lost generation.
In record-setting numbers, young adults struggling to find work are shunning long-distance moves to live with Mom and Dad, delaying marriage and buying fewer homes, often raising kids out of wedlock. They suffer from the highest unemployment since World War II and risk living in poverty more than others ? nearly 1 in 5.
New 2010 census data released Thursday show the wrenching impact of a recession that officially ended in mid-2009. It highlights the missed opportunities and dim prospects for a generation of mostly 20-somethings and 30-somethings coming of age in a prolonged slump with high unemployment.
"We have a monster jobs problem, and young people are the biggest losers," said Andrew Sum, an economist and director of the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University. He noted that for recent college grads now getting by with waitressing, bartending and odd jobs, they will have to compete with new graduates for entry-level career positions when the job market eventually does improve.
"Their really high levels of underemployment and unemployment will haunt young people for at least another decade," Sum said.
Richard Freeman, an economist at Harvard University, added: "These people will be scarred, and they will be called the `lost generation' ? in that their careers would not be the same way if we had avoided this economic disaster."
Beyond the economy's impact, the new figures also show a rebound in the foreign-born population to 40 million, or 12.9 percent, the highest share since 1920. The 1.4 million increase from 2009 was the biggest since the mid-decade housing boom and could fuel debate in this election season about U.S. immigration strategy.
Most immigrants continue to be low-skilled workers from Latin America, with growing numbers from Asia also arriving on the bet that U.S. jobs await. An estimated 11.2 million immigrants are here illegally.
Seniors 65 and older tended to return to or stay put in their jobs, accounting for the few U.S. employment gains in recent months. About 1 in 6 older Americans is now in the labor force ? the highest level since the 1960s, before more generous Social Security and Medicare benefits made it more attractive to retire.
Nationwide, employment among young adults 16-29 stood at 55.3 percent, down from 67.3 percent in 2000 and the lowest since the end of World War II. Young males who lacked a college degree ? typically black and Hispanic ? were most likely to lose jobs due to reduced demand for blue-collar jobs in construction, manufacturing and transportation during the downturn. Among teens, employment was less than 30 percent.
In all, the employment-to-population ratio for all age groups from 2007-2010 dropped faster than for any similar period since the government began tracking the data in 1948. In the past year, 43 of the 50 largest U.S. metropolitan areas continued to post declines in employment, led by Charlotte, N.C., Jacksonville, Fla., Las Vegas, Phoenix, Los Angeles and Detroit, all cities experiencing a severe housing bust, budget deficits or meltdowns in industries such as banking or manufacturing.
Without work, young adults aren't starting careers and lives in new cities, instead hanging out with their parents.
Among adults 18-34, the share of long-distance moves across state lines fell last year to roughly 3.2 million people, or 4.4 percent, the lowest level since World War II. For college graduates, who historically are more likely to relocate out of state, long-distance moves dipped to 2.4 percent.
Opting to stay put, roughly 5.9 million Americans 25-34 last year lived with their parents, an increase of 25 percent from before the recession. Driven by a record 1 in 5 young men who doubled up in households, men are now nearly twice as likely as women to live with their parents.
Marriages fell to a record low last year of just 51.4 percent among adults 18 and over, compared with 57 percent in 2000. Among young adults 25-34, marriage was at 44.2 percent, also a new low.
Broken down by race and ethnicity, 31 percent of young black men lived in their parents' homes, compared with 21 percent of young Latino men and 15 percent of young white men. At the state level, New York had the highest share of young men living with their parents at 21 percent, followed by New Jersey and Hawaii, all states with higher costs of living. Most of the cities with low percentages of young adults living at home were in the Midwest.
Homeownership declined for a fourth consecutive year, to 65.4 percent, following a peak of 67.3 percent in 2006.
"Many young adults are essentially postponing adulthood and all of the family responsibilities and extra costs that go along with it," said Mark Mather, an associate vice president at the private Population Reference Bureau. He described a shift toward a new U.S. norm ? commonly seen in Europe ? in which more people wait until their 30s to leave the parental nest.
"Some of these changes started before the recession but now they are accelerating, with effects on families that could be long term," Mather said.
In all, the District of Columbia plus 14 states had the largest ratios of college graduates to high-school dropouts ? more than 3 to 1. Several of these places, including the District of Columbia and states with larger immigrant populations, also had the widest income gaps between rich and poor.
The number of Hispanic children in poverty rose by half a million to 6.1 million last year, led by California, New Mexico, Texas, Arizona and Nevada, making up a majority of the increase in total child poverty. Hispanics now comprise 37 percent of children in poverty, compared with 30 percent for whites and 27 percent for blacks.
"We are really at a crossroads," said William H. Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution. "These new young immigrants and their children need a pathway to the middle class ? good educations, affordable housing and jobs ? at the same time federal and state budgets are strapped for funds. While we face tough choices, the quality of our future labor force depends on meeting their needs."
Other census findings:
_About 1 in 4 families with children is headed by single mothers, a record high. Among young families with a head of household younger than 30, the poverty rate jumped from 30 percent in 2007 to 37 percent. In contrast, poverty remained at a low 5.7 percent for families with a head of household 65 or older.
_The number of households receiving food stamps swelled by 2 million to 13.6 million, meaning that nearly 1 in 8 receives the government aid. The highest shares of recipients are in Oregon, Tennessee, Michigan, Kentucky and Mississippi. Among households receiving food stamps, more than half have children.
The 2010 numbers are from the American Community Survey, which queries 3 million households. In some cases, figures are supplemented with data from the Current Population Survey to establish historical trends.
In the section below I'll walk through how to create a task from start to finish; then I'll highlight some of my favorite pre-made ifttt recipes that you can start using in a couple of clicks, no setup required. (If you prefer, you can just go straight to the recipes, though I'd recommend reading through how to create a task so you understand the basics.)
How to Create an ifttt Task
As I mentioned above (and as the service's name implies), a task is made of an If ... Then ... statement. Put in ifttt terms, If trigger, then action. The trigger and action are the building blocks of ifttt tasks, and you define them using available channels.
ifttt channels are made up of the services ifttt supports, like Craigslist, Dropbox, Evernote, Facebook, RSS feeds, Flickr, Foursquare, Gmail, Google Reader, Instagram, Instapaper, Last.fm, SMS, Twitter, and so on. You can see all of ifttt's 35 (currently) supported channels here.
To wrap your head around how to create a custom task on ifttt, let's create a simple task on ifttt that automatically downloads Facebook pictures you're tagged in and stores them in your Dropbox folder. (This task is available as a recipe in the section below, but it's a good example, so I'll walk through how to make it yourself first.
Navigate to ifttt's Create a task page (you'll need to sign up if you haven't already). ifttt holds your hand through the task creation process, so when you first visit the task creation page, you'll see this:
Step One: Choose a Trigger Channel
Click the bold this and ifttt will display this channel picker:
You want to trigger this task whenever someone tags a photo of you on Facebook, so Facebook will be your trigger channel. Click Facebook. (If this is the first time you've used the Facebook channel, you'll need to authorize the Facebook channel.)
Step Two: Choose a Trigger
Next you'll see all the possible Facebook triggers built into ifttt. Your options are:
New status message by you
You post a new link
You upload a new photo
You are tagged in a photo
Your profile changes
You can create tasks that are triggered by any of those Facebook actions, but for the purpose of this action, we want the You are tagged in a photo action, so click that.
Step Three: Complete Trigger Fields
At this step, you can define trigger fields specific to certain channels. Our Facebook trigger doesn't have any trigger fields (there are no possible variables; it's triggered whenever you're tagged in a photo). When you're using other channels, like the RSS or Craigslist channels, for example, you'd paste a URL you want to watch in this step. (I'll explain a little more about how fields work in step six below.) Since this trigger has no trigger fields, just click Create Trigger. If all went well, you should see this:
Congrats! You've successfully defined your trigger. Now to define the action that follows the trigger. For our task, that means placing the tagged photo into a folder in Dropbox. Click the big blue "that" link to define your action.
Step Four: Choose an Action Channel
Now it's time to pick the channel that will react to our trigger. For our example, as you'd expect, the action channel is Dropbox. So click the Dropbox icon. Again, if this is the first time you're using Dropbox as an ifttt channel, you'll need to authorize it.
Step Five: Choose an Action
Dropbox only has one possible action: Add file from URL. Good news! That's exactly what we want! So click Add file from URL and move on to the next step.
Step Six: Complete Action Fields
If you recall, the tagged photos trigger from our Facebook channel didn't have any fields. Dropbox, on the other hand, does have fields that you need to fill out: The URL of the file you want to add to Dropbox and the folder inside Dropbox where you want to store your tagged photos.
ifttt is smart (brilliant, even), so it already has the action fields filled out so that the File URL is defined as the tagged photo URL on Facebook?which is exactly what you want. It does this using "Addins" that are supplied by default when you choose the Facebook tagged photos trigger. ifttt knows that if that's your trigger, it can supply the action with several attributes. For the Facebook tagged photos trigger, you can use any of the following information in your action fields:
Uploaded by
Fb Photo URL (a link to the page on Facebook where the photo is visible)
Photo Small URL (a shrunk down, thumbnail version of your picture)
Photo Source URL (this is the URL to the full image?and it's what we're using for File URL, defined by the {{ImageSource}} text you see in the File URL input)
Photo Caption
Uploaded Date
So keep File URL as is. You can set the Dropbox folder path input to whatever you like. By default, it's going to create an ifttt/facebook/tagged folder inside the root of your Dropbox folder. You can change this to whatever you want.
A note on addins: If you wanted, you could use an addin to, for example, place images in folders based on who took the pic. To do that (and for the purpose of illustration for how you might use addins), click the Dropbox folder path input, click the Addins drop-down, and select Uploaded by. You'll see a description of what the addin text will look like, and if you click the blue Addin tag, ifttt will append the addin to your input. You'll notice in this addin example, the Dropbox folder path becomes ifttt/facebook/tagged/{{From}}; if I tagged a photo of you, you'd see it in your Dropbox folder at ifttt/facebook/tagged/Adam Pash
Once you've got your action fields all filled out, click Create Action.
Step Seven: Activate Your Task
You've officially created your first task. High five, baby! At this step you can add a description of your task. Descriptions are particularly useful if you want to share it as a recipe for others to reuse. When you're all finished, click Create.
That's all there is to it. ifttt will check each trigger every 15 minutes; every time a trigger returns true (in this case, whenever you're tagged in a new photo on Facebook), it'll execute the action (sync the photo to Dropbox).
Step Eight: Turn Your Task into a Recipe (Optional)
If you want to share your brilliant task with the world, you can turn it into a recipe. To do so, visit your tasks page and click the task you want to make into a recipe. On the task page, click the recipe icon (it looks like a mortar and pestle).
Give your recipe a description if you like, edit any of the fields, and create your recipe. Yum.
10 of My Favorite ifttt Recipes
Now you know how to create tasks. Awesome! You can scratch a lot of itches by smashing together various channels and using your imagination, but you can also enjoy brilliant recipes other ifttt users have already made. Here are some of my favorites:
Note: Click the image to go straight to the recipe. You may also notice my name in these images; when you activate the recipe, that'll all display your information.
Download Facebook tagged photos to Dropbox
Text me if it's going to rain
Greet new Twitter followers with a direct message
Save all Instagram photos to Dropbox
Send Google Reader starred items to Instapaper
Put Foursquare check-ins on your Google Calendar
Sync Instagram pics to a Facebook album
Remotely download a torrent by sending a link in an email
Send an IM to ifttt, get an easy-excuse phone call
Post your Instagram pics to Flickr
It's no coincidence that most of my favorites rank high on ifttt's most popular recipes page. Browse through the newest to check out of the more niche recipes, or just to see some of the less obvious uses that haven't risen to the top.
Absurdly Specific
Most recipes have pretty broad uses, but you can use the service to fill really specific needs, too. You could, for example, have ifttt send you an SMS alert when something you're watching for on Craigslist shows up in a search feed.
I'm really into ifttt right now, so I've created a recipe that IMs me whenever someone creates a new ifttt recipe so I can keep track of new tasks I might want to try out. Jenna Wortham created a task that calls her?on the phone?whenever the stoned, non-Netflix-controlled Twitter user Qwikster tweets.
How Are You Using ifttt?
If This Then That is full of potential, which is why people like me love it so much. Whether you've been playing with it since we first covered it last week or today's the first you've tried it out, let's hear about the interesting ways you're using it in the comments.
