The Coast Guard reported a oil spill off the coast of Carpinteria Friday morning.

The spill happened near the Pacific Operators offshore oil rig called Platform Houchin.

The Fish and Game Department is coordinating with the operators of the rig in the cleanup effort. The Coast Guard said automatic safety shutdowns on the platform secured pipeline operations shortly after the incident. Approximately one thousand gallons of oily water mixture has been recovered so far. However, a media release from the Coast Guard does not indicate how much oil was actually spilled.

The Coast Guard conducted aerial assessment early this morning. They said there is a minimal chance of shoreline impact. As a precaution, they will monitor the beaches from Santa Barbara to Carpentaria.

KEY News will bring you the latest developments as well as any impact the spill has on local beaches.
