Kelowna's sports community grateful to 'passionate' builder

A self-admitted football fanatic, Dr. Barry Urness is likely best known in Kelowna for founding the Okanagan Sun.

Still, as profound an effect as Urness had on the junior football club, his volunteer work in the community at large over three-plus decades reached well beyond the gridiron.

Former CHBC sportscaster Pat Kennedy first met Urness in 1981 and has marveled at his contributions to the City of Kelowna ever since.

"Barry was deeply involved in so many aspects of the community and he was so passionate about everything he did," said Kennedy. "His positive effects on the various committees, and groups and people were far-reaching. At the same time, he was humble and didn't want the accolades. Anyone who has lived here can be grateful for what Barry has done for Kelowna."

Urness passed away last Thursday after a battle with cancer. He was 69.

Lawrence Nagy first met Urness in the 1970s when Nagy was playing football at Immaculata.

The two would form a lifelong friendship, and in 1988 would be indelibly tied together in local sports history when the Sun won the Canadian junior football championship. Urness was the team president and Nagy, the head coach.

"Barry was passionate, he was a tireless worker and he didn't like the limelight," said Nagy, the head coach of the Sun when the club won national championships in 1988 and 2000.

"Barry's passion wasn't really about winning championships, it was more important to build things up from nothing, and to see other people benefit and have success from the work he did. If there was something you needed done, he was the guy to call. Barry was one of a kind."

Nagy credits Urness's guidance and hard work as the main catalyst behind the Sun's first Canadian junior football title.

Urness, who founded the club, then served as the team's first president in 1981 and 1982, returned to the post in 1988.

"When he came back on board he really made things possible for us," said Nagy. "I really believe he was the man behind that championship."

Urness also helped to resurrect high school football in the Central Okanagan, served as president of the Kelowna Amatuer Sports Society for 10 years, and served on the Kelowna Civic Awards Committee for 25 years.

In 2008, he founded the Central Okanagan Sports Hall of Fame Museum.

Earlier this month, Urness was inducted into the C.O. Hall of Fame in the special recognition category.

Pat Kennedy, the current managing director of the COSHF, said Urness was a true visionary.

"Through all the years what strikes me is that he had great vision," said Kennedy. "He would bring people on board, like Mayor Walter Gray, and they would immediately buy into what Barry was doing. Barry's biggest asset was gathering people and leading them, and that's why he got things done."

Urness was also a renowned and loyal Saskatchewan Roughrider football fan. His brother, Ted Urness, played for the Riders from 1961 to 1970.

In addition to his involvement with sports teams and organizations, Urness was involved in many other civic and community endeavors, including serving as provincial director of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, and being the honourary chairman for the first two phases of the Mission Creek Greenway project.

Dr. Urness was also recognized by the Government of Canada with a Commemorative Medallion in honour of the 125th anniversary of Confederation.

Urness is survived by his wife Betty, sons David and Dean, and five?grandchildren.

A memorial service for Barry Urness will be held Wednesday, July 4 at 2 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church.

Healthy foods lists | Bodybuilding, Supplements, Diets, Workouts ...

The secret to good health lies in the food that we eat. Healthy foods serve as a source for many essential nutrients. They protect the human body from different diseases and illness like cancer. Let us take a look at some of the important healthy foods that should form an integral part of your diet.

?

Opt for foods that are organically grown as they are better for your health.

Natural foods are better than canned and processed foods any day.

A microwave TV dinner maybe convenient, but it is not healthy.

Meat is tasty and a good source of protein, but do remember to include vegetables and fruits in your diet too. When eating meat, opt for white meat such as chicken and fish over red meat.

In addition to fruits and vegetables, add some nuts, seeds, whole grains, spices, and herbs to your cuisine.

These will not only make your food tastier, but also ensure that all your nutritional requirements are met.

Opt for non-starchy vegetables like carrots, spinach, green beans, or broccoli when you are out buying vegetables.

When it comes to grains, whole grains are better than processed grains any day. Instead of rice or pasta made from refined flour, opt for brown rice or whole wheat pastas. Whole grain breads are also better than white bread.

Just because a loaf of bread is brown in color does not mean it?s made from whole grains.

Check the ingredients and if you see any mention of refined flour there, it?s time to pick another loaf.

Incorporate turkey and chicken in your daily meals. Try to eat fish twice or thrice a week. Remember to de-skin the turkey or chicken before cooking it.

If you can?t do without red meat occasionally, opt for lean cuts of beef or pork.

Dairy is good for you, but it can also make you fat. Consume non or low fat dairy products like skimmed milk, or low fat yogurt and cheese.

Use liquid oils when cooking instead of solid fats. Mustard and olive oil are good choices.

Drink as much water as you can as it is the best cleanser for your body. Also opt for natural fruit and vegetable juices over sodas and other empty calorie drinks.

Spices and herbs are considered to be great antioxidants. Most of them are known to enhance metabolism, ability to burn the fat, prove out to be very effective in treating gastric and digestive disorders and also help with insomnia. Here are some healthy herbs that you can opt for:

? Ginger
? Mustard
? Cinnamon
? Allspice
? Peppermint
? Horseradish
? Garlic
? Turmeric
? Cumin
? Fennel
? Oregano
? Chili Powder
? Curry powder
? Paprika

B.o.B, Taylor Swift Salute Everyman In 'Both Of Us' Video

Pair examine everyday life in Nashville in new Jake Nava-directed video.
By Jocelyn Vena

B.o.B in his video for "Both of Us"
Photo:

If you've ever wondered what would happen if B.o.B and Taylor Swift hung out together in Nashville and hired video director Jake Nava to film it, well, wonder no more.

The twosome are committing their song collaboration to celluloid in the just-released clip for the rapper's track "Both of Us," which features the country-pop superstar on the hook.

But if you thought the video would pay homage to the glittering honky-tonks of Nashville, think again. This video instead sheds light on the grittier sides of the country music capital, following the lyrics of the track, which center on adversity and strife. Bobby Ray and Taylor are rarely seen in the same shot, as southern Americana is the twosome's most prominent co-star.

The clip opens with B.o.B hanging out in his modest home, while Swift is chilling out in the most un-Taylor Swift spot in music video history, a pool hall. There are shots of tatted locals, cowboy-boot-wearing young women, shirtless youths playing in sprinklers, teens kissing, a mobile home, and a dog that leaves Taylor awestruck with his high-flying antics.

The video isn't glamorous, but it leaves viewers appreciating the little things in life. It's not about money, it's about understanding that sometimes a romp through a sprinkler or a good game of billiards is enough to take you away from the mundane moments of everyday life.

As the video closes out, viewers are left with a sort of fantasy, with B.o.B and Swift re-imagined as the everyman and everywoman living simple lives in rural Tennessee, much like the folks in the video.

It's like B.o.B says in the song: "Hey, but if it's all for one and one for all/ Then maybe one day we all could ball/ Do it one time for the underdogs/ From Bobby Ray to all of y'all." Swift shares in the sentiment when she answers on the chorus, "I wish I was strong enough to lift not one but both of us/ Someday I will be strong enough to lift not one but both of us."

The track is off B.o.B's album Strange Clouds. Swift and the MC shot the clip in Music City, USA in mid-June, weeks prior to the official release.

COMMUNICATION IN A RELATIONSHIP | rossfleming.com

images

Michael Brady

Communication is a vital part of our lives: a typical day involves many interactions between ourselves, our work colleagues and clients, our children, our friends, our ex?s, future relationships, etc. This interaction takes place where we live, work, relax, socialize and wherever we perform routine tasks.

Communication skills are critical for building healthy relationships, especially when one realizes that one of the most common causes of relational breakdown is a lack of communication. Just as communication can be the most important part of a relationship; arguments can be the most destructive aspect ? the closer we are to someone, the more easily we can bruise or be bruised. There is very little truth in the saying: ?Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never harm me.? It?s not what we say, but rather how we say it, that most often hurts another person.

Do you identify with any of these statements?

?He never listens to me when I talk!?

?She talks and talks, but never actually says anything!?

?It?s like talking to a brick wall?

?I can?t get through to you?

?We can?t talk about anything important without getting into a fight?

?She?s too emotional ? she?s either crying or shouting or complaining. It?s easier to avoid her?

?He always gets defensive when I try to talk about issues?

Communication is a complex process; of which speaking only makes up for 10-20%. The other 80-90% is made up by facial expressions, body language, tone of voice, etc.

Communication is the art/ science of transferring a thought/ idea/ information from the mind of one complex human being to the mind of one or more complex human being(s). For communication to be effective, it must be a two-way process.

Dynamics of Interpersonal Communication

1. Facts: are both people communicating about the same set of facts? Try to separate the facts from thoughts or feelings.

2. Interpretations, Thoughts or Perceptions: Each person interprets a fact differently based on their belief system, personality, values and experience.

3. Feelings: how we are feeling, our current mood and frame of mind, etc can sub-consciously affect decisions and thoughts.

4. Intentions, Needs or Wants: hidden agendas; are we looking for comfort, clarification, information or simply a chance to interact? We judge ourselves on our intentions.

5. Actions: choice of words (is the intent to create harm?) + tone of voice + non-verbal speech = body language, posture, eye contact, facial expressions, etc.

?The medium is the message? => the way the message is delivered is the message itself.

6. Self: The communication centre, which includes the issue, topic or conflict at hand, has been ?filtered? by the facts, interpretations, thoughts, feelings, intentions, and choices of behaviour / actions.

Listening and Feedback

Did I say what I meant to say? ? Invite feedback to clarify communication.

Someone who?s not listening lets their mind drift and is already preparing the next argument or opposing thought; inaccurate feedback or limited eye contact.

Listening is an active, not a passive process. When two people argue, they only hear ?what they want to hear?, not what?s actually said. This equates to the accusation of ?not listening?. Most couples start arguing and within 5 minutes are arguing about the way they are arguing.

Don?t argue when you?re angry ? you will not be able to listen objectively. Give yourself time to cool down and then broach the subject when you are in a more reasonable frame of mind.

It?s important to give feedback ? checking and confirming. Did I understand you correctly? Is this what you mean? I heard you say this: am I right? Feedback can be verbal / non-verbal e.g. a nod, smile, silence or a cold shoulder. No feedback is in itself a form of feedback.

If the words and actions contradict each other, it is better to believe the actions!

Conflict Resolution

Conflict resolution can either be Constructive or Destructive.

Destructive Style ? hinders or inhibits the conflict resolution process:

Confrontational (win or lose, blaming)

Sabotage (focus on weak points, shaming)

Manipulation (blackmail, withdrawal)

Giving in (passive, submissive)

Avoidance (denial, withdrawal)

Constructive Style ? trying to minimize the issues and avoiding the difficulties in resolving the problems:

Compromise (meet halfway, understanding)

Accommodate (open discussion, communication without confrontation)

Partnership (solutions, forgiveness, honesty)

When trying to resolve conflicts, try to clarify your goals, as you will probably share many of the same goals despite of your differences. Avoid bargaining, as this may lead to each party taking a rigid position which in turn can flare tempers.

When resolving conflicts, remember that their causes may run deep. Sweeping issues under the carpet isn?t going to work in the long term, as old baggage will be brought up each time an argument starts. Try to fully resolve each issue as it comes along. You may find the following method useful:

1. Ask the other person for their feelings. Your conflict probably isn?t about the issue that caused it to start in the first place. Don?t forget that your goal is sorting out the problem, not winning an argument!

2. Ask the other person to define the problem. Stick to solving one problem at a time, that way you can understand each problem as the other person sees it.

3. Express your own feelings. Be careful to word them carefully, for example use phrases such as ?I feel?? rather than ?I think you??

4. Define the problem as you see it. As your feelings come out, the solution may become clearer. Remember that by you listening to the other person; you will have set the tone for them to listen to you.

5. Create multiple solutions. Don?t go back to your original agenda. Aim to find alternative or creative solutions that reduce emotions and tension.

6. Rate the possible solutions. Remember that no one can force an unacceptable solution on the other.

7. Combine and create a mutually acceptable solution. Create something acceptable to both parties, if this doesn?t work ? go back to step 1 and ensure both parties are being totally honest.

8. Be sure both parties agree to work towards resolving the issue.

Troubleshooting For Problems in Communication

Control or Power Issues: Effective communication cannot take place if one person has ?control? over the other or where there is not mutual respect and equality of relationship. To stay in control leads to relational isolation as the underdog reacts in anger at being manipulated or belittled.

Triangulation: Do not bring in a third party to avoid direct confrontation. If you have a problem with someone, go directly to that person. Don?t dump your accusations on mutual friends or your children in the hope of winning support to balance the scales in your favour ? it leads to more substantial and long-lasting damage, especially when a child is used as a weapon between parents.

19 Steps to Effective Communication

1. See communication as an opportunity to praise, build-up, affirm, heal, support and give positive reinforcement, rather than to correct, criticise, tear down, hurt, wound, lash out at. Praise opens doors to further communication, while criticism shuts them down.

2. Remember that actions speak louder than words; non-verbal communication usually is more powerful than verbal communication. Avoid double messages in which the verbal and the non-verbal messages convey something contradictory. (Credibility gap)

3. Define what is important and stress it; define what is unimportant and de-emphasise or ignore it. Avoid fault-finding.

4. Communicate in ways that show respect for the other person?s worth as a human being. ?Avoid statements which begin with the words ?You never ?? or ?I think you ??.

5. Be clear and specific in your communication. Avoid vagueness.

6. Be realistic and reasonable in your statements. Avoid exaggeration and sentences which begin with ?You always ??

7. Test all your assumptions verbally by asking if they are accurate. Avoid acting until this is done.

8. Recognize that each event can be seen from different points of view. Avoid assuming that other people see things like you do. (Perception)

9. Recognize that your family members and close friends are experts on you and your behaviour. Avoid the tendency to deny their observations about you ? especially if you are not sure.

10. Recognize that disagreement can be a meaningful form of communication. Avoid destructive arguments.

11. Be honest and open about your feelings and viewpoints. Bring up all significant problems even if you are afraid that doing so will disturb another person. Speak the truth in love. Avoid sullen silences.

12. Do not put down and/or manipulate the other person with tactics such as ridicule, interrupting, name-calling, changing the subject, blaming, bugging, sarcasm, criticism, pouting, guilt-inducing, etc. Avoid the one-upmanship game.

13. Be more concerned about how your communication affects others than about what you intended. Avoid getting bitter if you are misunderstood.

14. Accept all feelings and try to understand why others feel and act as they do. Avoid the tendency to say, ?you shouldn?t feel like that.?

15. Be tactful considerate and courteous. Avoid taking advantage of the other person?s feelings.

16. Ask questions and listen carefully. Avoid preaching or lecturing.

17. Do not use excuses. Avoid falling for the excuses of others.

18. Speak kindly politely and softly. Avoid nagging yelling or whining.

19. Recognize the value of humour and seriousness. Avoid destructive teasing.

Summary

As you look ahead to new relationships, you need to be able to break old and faulty communication patterns to allow for healthier interaction. The use of praise and positive reinforcement will reconstruct wounded and broken self-images and will build self-esteem, particularly in children. By becoming an effective communicator, you will also grow and become a better person which will positively enhance all your relationships.

Scientists spark new interest in the century-old Edison battery

Tuesday, June 26, 2012

Stanford University scientists have breathed new life into the nickel-iron battery, a rechargeable technology developed by Thomas Edison more than a century ago.

Designed in the early 1900s to power electric vehicles, the Edison battery largely went out of favor in the mid-1970s. Today only a handful of companies manufacture nickel-iron batteries, primarily to store surplus electricity from solar panels and wind turbines.

"The Edison battery is very durable, but it has a number of drawbacks," said Hongjie Dai, a professor of chemistry at Stanford. "A typical battery can take hours to charge, and the rate of discharge is also very slow."

Now, Dai and his Stanford colleagues have dramatically improved the performance of this century-old technology. The Stanford team has created an ultrafast nickel-iron battery that can be fully charged in about 2 minutes and discharged in less than 30 seconds. The results are published in the June 26 issue of the journal Nature Communications.

"We have increased the charging and discharging rate by nearly 1,000 times," said Stanford graduate student Hailiang Wang, lead author of the study. "We've made it really fast."

The high-performance, low-cost battery could some day be used to help power electric vehicles, much as Edison originally intended, Dai said. "Hopefully we can give the nickel-iron battery a new life," he added.

Electric vehicles

Edison, an early advocate of all-electric vehicles, began marketing the nickel-iron battery around 1900. It was used in electric cars until about 1920. The battery's long life and reliability made it a popular backup power source for railroads, mines and other industries until the mid-20th century.

Edison created the nickel-iron battery as an inexpensive alternative to corrosive lead-acid batteries. Its basic design consists of two electrodes ? a cathode made of nickel and an anode made of iron ? bathed in an alkaline solution. "Importantly, both nickel and iron are abundant elements on Earth and relatively nontoxic," Dai noted.

Carbon has long been used to enhance electrical conductivity in electrodes. To improve the Edison battery's performance, the Stanford team used graphene ? nanosized sheets of carbon that are only one-atom thick ? and multi-walled carbon nanotubes, each consisting of about 10 concentric graphene sheets rolled together.

"In conventional electrodes, people randomly mix iron and nickel materials with conductive carbon," Wang explained. "Instead, we grew nanocrystals of iron oxide onto graphene, and nanocrystals of nickel hydroxide onto carbon nanotubes."

This technique produced strong chemical bonding between the metal particles and the carbon nanomaterials, which had a dramatic effect on performance. "Coupling the nickel and iron particles to the carbon substrate allows electrical charges to move quickly between the electrodes and the outside circuit," Dai said. "The result is an ultrafast version of the nickel-iron battery that's capable of charging and discharging in seconds."

Future applications

The 1-volt prototype battery developed in Dai's lab has just enough power to operate a flashlight. The researchers' goal is to make a bigger battery that could be used for the electrical grid or transportation.

Most electric cars, such as the Nissan Leaf and the Chevy Volt, run on lithium-ion batteries, which can store a lot of energy but typically take hours to charge. "Our battery probably won't be able to power an electric car by itself, because the energy density is not ideal," Wang said. "But it could assist lithium-ion batteries by giving them a real power boost for faster acceleration and regenerative braking."

The enhanced Edison battery might be especially useful in emergency situations, Dai added. "There may be applications for the military, for example, where you have to charge something very quickly," he said.

"It's definitely scalable," Wang said. "Nickel, iron and carbon are relatively inexpensive. And the electrolyte is just water with potassium hydroxide, which is also very cheap and safe. It won't blow up in a car."

The prototype battery has one key drawback ? the ability to hold a charge over time. "It doesn't have the charge-discharge cycling stability that we would like," Dai said. "Right now it decays by about 20 percent over 800 cycles. That's about the same as a lithium-ion battery. But our battery is really fast, so we'd be using it more often. Ideally, we don't want it to decay at all.

"The use of strongly coupled nanomaterials represents a very exciting approach to making electrodes," he said. "It's different from traditional methods, where you simply mix materials together. I think Thomas Edison would be happy to see this progress."

Analysis: Egypt elections only the beginning

Mohamed Messara / EPA

A man paints the flag of Egypt and heart on the face of an Egyptian woman during demonstration at Tahrir Square in Cairo, Egypt on June 25, 2012.

By Ayman Mohyeldin, NBC News Cairo

Analysis

CAIRO -- Egypt's presidential elections are a watershed moment for the country, an unfinished revolution and political Islam. Some will look at this moment and say it fell short of expectations, others will look at it and say it exceed some expectations. In the final analysis, how Egypt's elections measure up depends on the measuring stick one uses to assess its importance.?

If you strip away the politics for a moment and look simply at the mechanics of the electoral process, I think it's safe to say most Egyptians feel the process -- a purely mechanical process -- was free, transparent and had integrity. While citing some irregularities, The Carter Center, a nongovernmental organization, didn't discredit the overall integrity of the process. Compare this to elections in Egypt over the past years and you will see why it was crucially important for the state's institutions to prove it can carry out an election professionally and credibly in the eyes of its own citizens.

Mohamed Messara / EPA

Supporters of Presidential candidate Mohamed Morsi demonstrate in Cairo, Egypt, on June 25, 2012.

?

People boycotted the elections, and yes, the incoming president does not have a large mandate, but that's politics not process. At the end of the day, 25 million Egyptians voted and they believe their voice mattered and made a difference. That is a historic first in a country where 85 million voices were rarely heard.?

On to the other measuring stick: political Islam. Egypt is the birthplace of political Islam. The Muslim Brotherhood, which inspired Islamist political movements around the world, was born in Egypt. For the better part of 80 years, the Muslim Brotherhood has been part of the fabric of Egypt, shaping the identity of the country and its citizens. There is only problem: the state refused to acknowledge it. For decades, while the group was banned from participating in political life, it played a role in shaping the social identity of the country instead.

Eric Trager, a fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, studies Egyptian opposition groups. He speaks with NBC News' Charlene Gubash about what the Muslim Brotherhood's victory means for the U.S. and the region.

Egypt's big turn under the Muslim Brotherhood

For years, the Brotherhood's leadership was routinely killed, tortured, imprisoned and harassed by secular-authoritarian-military dominated governments. Today, that very same military-led government has conceded the Muslim Brotherhood can no longer be ignored, marginalized or suppressed and in fact they are entitled to run the process -- with some limitations. This is important because Arab countries have rejected political Islam as a system of governance and many are skeptical of it.

That is a valid concern. But if one wants political Islamic movements to falter, they must be tested in the political arena. As targeted organizations by dictatorial regimes, Islamist movements thrived on being the victims and translated that grassroots sympathy into support. They then used that support to derive their legitimacy. Today, they are no longer victims or the underdogs in Egypt. Now they will be tested and judged based on their performance, not their myth. Egyptians will and can hold their officials responsible -- that's a lesson learned from the Jan. 25, 2011 revolution.?

Mohammed Morsi, Egypt's next president: Protesters' bloodshed will not be in vain

Is that a risk worth taking? Will the Muslim Brotherhood ruin Egypt? Will the Muslim Brotherhood impose Islamic law? Will the Muslim Brotherhood go to war and destabilize the region? The answer is no. If there is one thing that has happened in Egypt since Jan. 25, it has been the fragmentation of power across the country. There has been an explosion of vibrant media, a flowering of civil society organizations, a robust and legal activism that was once dormant. Where once a handful of business and political elites ruled the country, the climate in Egypt today is still bringing new forces and people into the power sharing process. The election of Mohammed Morsi is one more indication that traditional power centers in Egypt are shifting and not yet settled. The last state institution that is begrudgingly learning that lesson is the military, which refuses to hand over complete power to a civilian government.

Egypt has elected a conservative president who has said he wants to impose Islamic law. How he will change the country remains unclear. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

The question that should be asked is whether the Muslim Brotherhood can consolidate as much power as authoritarian regimes have without the use of force. It's unlikely it can in the short to medium term. Can it consolidate power through the ballot box and legislation? Yes, that is possible, and that is where Egyptians should be watching closely and with great skepticism. But that happens over time and with the complicity of society at large. It's also why it's more important that secular liberal forces get their act together and get in the political mix.

If the revolution has taught Egyptians one thing, it has shattered people's fear to take on those in power -- including would-be religious fanatics. If you want to measure the elections by the measuring stick of the revolution, it's safe to say that Egypt today is not what the revolutionaries envisioned. But then again it's naive to think removing Hosni Mubarak was going to remove the regime as well.

Today, the message to Egypt's military and others is simple: you can no longer maintain your exclusive monopoly on power. Morsi is not a product of Egypt's powerful security establishment. He is not a wealthy businessman. The fact that he can now preside over a country that had these two pillars as the cornerstone of the regime is a milestone. Is Morsi a revolutionary candidate? No. But Morsi, the candidate, was borne out of the the revolution and that is not lost on him or the Muslim Brotherhood, whose popularity has waned considerably and whose credibility has been challenged repeatedly by their miscalculations throughout the transitional period.?

In the final analysis, the elections in Egypt should not be considered the end of a transitional process, but rather the beginning. In Egypt today, more power, no matter how regulated or muted, is being divided among more players and the result will be a more pluralistic political arena. Will the president challenge the military? Will he represent the people or his political affiliation? Will the military persistently defy the will of its people? Will liberal forces join Islamists against the military? Will the business elite actually start building a genuine economy and create a level playing field? I don't know the answers to any of these questions. But the fact that millions of Egyptians can ask them and begin to answer them for themselves is a good start. These elections were critical and a milestone for Egypt but they will not be as important as the next elections.

Jenny McCarthy Playboy Cover: Revealed!

Some things really do get better with age.

Just months away from turning 40, and 19 years after she got naked in Playboy for the first time, Jenny McCarthy is back in the men's magazine.

And she's still got it.

The model / actress' fourth nude pictorial hits newsstands this Friday in the July / August issue. Check out the just-released cover photo of Jenny McCarthy in Playboy:

Jenny McCarthy Nude

"I'm really proud of it," McCarthy told People of the pictorial.

"The pictures are really gorgeous and classy. They really could be out of W magazine."

"They're just really elegant photos. It's probably a lot more sophisticated than a lot of the stuff you'd see of people with their clothes on."

"The one thing I like about Playboy is they don't have the anorexic look. The women are voluptuous. So I didn't really want to diet. I just wanted to tone up."

Mission accomplished, we'd have to say. Models everywhere need to take a cue from this (and Kate Upton pictures) and do what comes naturally: Eat.

LastPass 2.0

Sometimes the best things in life really are free. LastPass 2.0, the latest edition of PCMag's Editors' Choice for password manager, won't cost you a penny, and it outperforms the competition, both free and paid.

The developers at LastPass don't scrimp when it comes to updates. According to the product's revision history there have been over a dozen revisions, large and small, since I reviewed LastPass 1.72 (free, 5 stars). I'll highlight the major enhancements in this review.

Thorough Installation
You'll go through quite a few steps installing LastPass, but by the time you're through you'll have a fully functional ready-to-run installation. The installer adds plug-ins for the browsers it detects and offers to create a LastPass account if you don't already have one. It checks your browsers for insecurely stored passwords and offers to import them, remove them from the browser, and turn off the browser's password management. The fact that it can do all this is pretty clear evidence that browser-stored passwords aren't safe.

New in this edition, during installation you can import the password and other details for your Wi-Fi connection into a secure note. After installation, you can choose to import the login details for every Wi-Fi connection stored on your PC. Once you complete the installation process, the installer offers to show a video explaining just what you can do with LastPass.

Secure Storage
With LastPass, all of your passwords and other data are stored online in a highly encrypted format. The system is designed so that the people at LastPass have no access to your password. Even if subpoenaed to release your encrypted data, they simply couldn't. And the encryption system they use is highly resistant to brute force attacks. I'm confident enough that I use it myself.

If you just can't stomach the thought of keeping your passwords in the cloud, you'll have to choose a different product. RoboForm Desktop 7 ($29.95 direct, 4 stars) stores your encrypted passwords on the local computer. Dashlane 1.1 (free, 4.5 stars) offers a choice between local and cloud storage. If you enable the Sync option it stores the encrypted data online with the ability to sync between different devices. But if you leave Sync disabled, all data gets stored locally.

Still worried? You might consider a self-contained option like MyLOK Personal ($89.95 direct, 4 stars) or the password manager component of IronKey Personal S200 ($79 direct, 4 stars). You won't get the full range of password management features, but you can feel secure with all your passwords in your pocket.

Islamists hail Morsy's Egypt victory, West wary

LONDON (Reuters) - Islamists around the world hailed Mohamed Morsy's election as Egypt's first freely chosen president as a victory for their cause on Sunday while the West, Gulf states and Israel reacted with caution, wary of his political agenda.

Closely watched from Gaza to the Gulf, the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate's win over former army general Ahmed Shafik was widely seen as an historic event with far-reaching consequences beyond Egypt's borders.

"The Egyptian nation did not elect a president just for Egypt, but for the Arab and Islamic nations too," said Fawzi Barhoum, a spokesman for Hamas in Gaza, which hopes Morsy may end Cairo's cooperation with an Israeli blockade.

Though Israel has tried hard to weaken Hamas, it too voiced respect for Morsy's victory and the "democratic process", while urging the new administration in Cairo to uphold the peace accord maintained by Egypt's ousted leader Hosni Mubarak for 33 years.

Viewing the victory through the prism of the Arab Spring uprisings that toppled leaders in Tunisia, Libya, and Yemen as well as Egypt, Islamists said they saw Morsy's win as proof their "revolution" was on the march.

"Mohamed Morsy a president for Egypt, thank God," said Mohammed al-Qahtani, a co-founder of the Saudi Civil and Political Rights Association (ACPRA), a group pushing for democracy.

"This is a victory for the Arab revolutions," he said in a post on social networking site Twitter.

The United States, which provides vast military aid to Egypt, welcomed the result but made clear it expected Morsy to ensure stability and not to veer to extremes.

"We believe that it is important for President-elect Morsy to take steps at this historic time to advance national unity by reaching out to all parties and constituencies in consultations about the formation of a new government," White House spokesman Jay Carney said in a statement, calling on the new leader to ensure Egypt remained "a pillar of regional peace".

Iran, which prides itself on its own Islamist credentials, paid fulsome tribute to those it called "the martyrs of the (Egyptian) revolution", whom it said were responsible for ushering in "a splendid vision of democracy".

"The revolutionary movement of the Egyptian people ... is in its final phases of a new era of developments in the Middle East and the Islamic Awakening," the foreign ministry said.

In Saudi Arabia, the world's number one oil producer, the government was silent. Its relations with the Muslim Brotherhood have been poor, with many of the kingdom's officials accusing it of backing demands for internal political change.

However, analysts said Saudi Arabia would have to work with the new Egyptian president.

"I think (the Saudis) are going to be very practical about it. More and more they will discover common interests in the economy, in politics, on how to deal with Iran," said Jamal Khashoggi, a prominent former newspaper editor with ties to the ruling family.

"BUILD BRIDGES"

A spokesperson for Catherine Ashton, the European Union's foreign policy chief, said the election was a major milestone in Egypt's democratic transition and that Ashton hoped the new president would be "representative of Egypt's diversity".

In Britain, William Hague, the foreign minister, gave Morsy a muted welcome, urging him to build bridges and uphold human rights, including those of women and religious minorities, in a statement broadly echoed other EU member states.

Turkey, an increasingly important power in the region, said Morsy's win reflected the will of the people, but made it clear he had a lot to prove. "Important tests await the new president who will lead the Egyptian people to the free and pluralist democracy they deserve," the foreign ministry said.

Across the Gulf, reaction was cautious.

In the United Arab Emirates, the WAM news agency said the government respected "the choice of the Egyptian people in the context of its democratic march".

Dahi Khalfan, the Dubai police chief, was more skeptical. "An unfortunate choice," he said in a tweet. "The repercussions of this choice will not be light to poor ordinary people."

Bahrain's state news agency said King Hamad congratulated Morsy, praising "an atmosphere of freedom and democracy", while Jordan's Minister of State for Information Samih al-Maaytah told Reuters his country hoped Morsy would ensure stability.

STREET REACTION

Many Egyptians living abroad expressed relief, saying they felt their homeland finally had a chance to flourish.

In Riyadh, Abdulhamid Saraya, 60, an expatriate Egyptian engineer, said Morsy's win was a watershed.

"I am happy we are ending 30 years of injustice. (Ahmed) Shafik's loss is an end to a dark age that forced us to leave the country and live abroad most of our lives to escape injustice and poor living conditions," he told Reuters.

Muslims elsewhere said they were also pleased with the result, but some had advice for the new president.

In Algeria, Atef Kedadra, a senior journalist on the country's El Khabar daily newspaper said Morsy's victory carried tremendous symbolic importance but he would now have to show he was inclusive. "If he appoints only Islamists, he will lose because the Islamists are not used to ruling a country."

In Abu Dhabi, a 37-year-old government employee who gave his name as Seif, was upbeat. "I am sure Egypt has a bright future. The Brothers are forced to keep up with modernity, progress and openness. They don't want to destroy or harm their country."

Catherine al-Talli, a prominent Syrian human rights lawyer, said events in Egypt were likely to encourage the opposition battling President Bashar al-Assad.

"It shows that the popular will brings about democratic change, and that when the people chose to rise against repression they can defeat it," she said.

The opposition Syrian National Council agreed, calling Morsy's victory "a source of hope for the rebellious Syrian people".

In Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Laya, a woman who goes to Cairo frequently said she was concerned about how Morsy's victory would change the way women were treated.

"They will think it's now okay to approach girls and reprimand them for the way they dress," she told Reuters.

Other Muslims said they worried Morsy's victory could open the door to fundamentalism.

"Egypt, the most moderate Arab state, run by fundamental Islamists, that's what I call a living nightmare," said Adel Hamza, a 42-year-old music lecturer in Baghdad.

"Al Qaeda is holding celebrations all over the world now."
