A total of 14 families had to move out of their homes as a result of the blast, which took place in a housing unit on the base. Mannweiler was not able to confirm the cause of the explosion.
Original post: Five people were thought to have been injured after an explosion at a Marine Corps base in Coleville, California, NBC station KRNV reported late Friday.
A California Highway Patrol dispatcher said it was estimated there were about five victims involved.
Officials said the explosion happened around 9 p.m. local time (12 a.m. ET) at the Marine Corps housing unit on the base. A fire also broke out.
So far, Mono County Sheriff's Deputies and the Mono County Fire Department were responding. They did not respond to any of KRNV's calls.
The station said it had been told that a careflight had been dispatched along with other emergency crews from Douglas County.
