A FAMILY in The Basin miraculously escaped injury after a big tree crashed through their house only minutes after they rushed outside to inspect other storm damage.
The tree crushed their lounge room during wild weather on Sunday, February 5. Knox SES received more than 100 calls for help within a few hours.
Mark and Robyn Ingram had gone outside to inspect a tree that had brought down powerlines on Democrat Drive about 1.45pm.
As they looked on, they heard a loud snap, and a gum tree in the front yard of their Yates Court property fell through their lounge room, where Mr Ingram had been sitting minutes earlier.
Mr Ingram had been out of hospital for only two days after a knee reconstruction and his wife had told him to stay inside.
?Lucky I don?t listen to my wife,? he said.
?We just watched it (the tree) disappear through the roof. I was in absolute shock, it was frightening.?
Mr Ingram initially feared for the safety of one of his sons, Jesse, who was having a shower at the time.
Jesse, 26, said he raced out when he heard a loud noise and was shocked to find a tree in the lounge.
The family was told they could not live in the house, which is insured.
Knox SES deputy controller Craig Carson said they received about 100 calls, with the Boronia, Ferntree Gully and Wantirna areas ?fairly severely hit?.
s"It was a very short burst (of bad weather) but we were kept busy right through until midnight,? he said.
Also on February 5, a 76-year-old Knoxfield man suffered a spinal injury after falling 4m from a tree just after 2pm.
Intensive care paramedic Ashley Jackson said the man was on a ladder pruning branches when he slipped and fell. It was not clear whether the fall was weather-related.
He was taken to the Alfred Hospital in a serious condition.
